With more than 50 years of experience in treating cancer patients from across the world, from being the chief of cancer department in Tata hospital to heading the cancer department of 8 corporate hospitals, with a passion to cure and prevent the spread of cancer in patients, to using the latest advanced treatments and medicines available in the world.
He joined the Oncology Department at the Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) in 1974. In 1985, he became the Chief of the Department of Medical Oncology. Under his stewardship, the department developed capabilities for providing modern medical and paediatric oncology services with laboratories for haematology, cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics, a day care chemotherapy unit, and patient counseling services.
He played an important role in establishing the Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in Medical Oncology at TMH (Mumbai University). He has trained many successful oncologists. Dr Advani is recognized as a pioneer in the establishment of bone marrow transplantation in India.
He has a special interest in Medical Oncology/Hematology and the medical interactions with other clinical branches and basic sciences. He is very interested in the field of developmental therapeutics and clinical research. This has integrated projects involving all the branches of clinical oncology as well as basic research. He also has an interest in biological therapeutics targeting various molecular targets on the cancer cells.

He is the recipient of many international and national awards including the Padmashri Award, the highest civilian honour granted by the President of India.
